Cowan, nestled in the foothills of the Cumberlands, developed in the mid-19th Century as a railroad and manufacturing industrial base.
The famous Mountain Goat, a railroad branch line serving Sewanee and the coal mining towns of Grundy County, connected with the mainline at Cowan and made the Cowan depot a famous landmark. Today, the Cowan Depot is home to Cowan Railroad Museum, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel, another historic landmark, was once the longest railroad tunnel in the world. The downtown depot district is home to restaurants and specialty shops while also serving as host to several cultural events.
The Fall Heritage Festival and the Cowan Christmas Parade are among Franklin County’s oldest and largest outdoor events. The nearby Monterey Station hosts large indoor events during the year as well. Cowan Center for the Arts is home to a number of music events, and Franklin County Arts Guild operates a gallery with classes, exhibits and lectures. Be sure to visit Cowan and enjoy what our historic hometown has to offer.
